“If you elect Tommy Sheridan then it will cause a political earthquake that will be felt across the world. You will elect a true fighter. A man who would charge the guns of the enemy without fearing the consequences.” George Galloway MP 10/11/09 Solidarity finished their Glasgow North East by-election campaign on high after four packed meetings in the constituency attracted hundreds of people. Tommy Sheridan and George Galloway spoke to packed halls in North Glasgow College, in Sighthill, Royston and Alexandra Parade. During the course of the campaign, Solidarity has been the ONLY party to hold public meetings. In addition to the events on the 10th November, the party held meetings in Springburn, Petershill, Possil Park and Milton. Solidarity also held a press conference and both George and Tommy were interviewed later in the day. (Press coverage here) George Galloway traveled to Glasgow North east at his own expense to campaign on behalf of his friend and comrade Tommy Sheridan. He said; “Only by electing Tommy Sheridan do the people of this constituency have a chance for real change.”
"Everybody knows the truth of this. The only result possible that would actually make a difference, that would change anything, that would make the political class sit up, would be a victory for Tommy Sheridan. Otherwise it's Tweedledum, Tweedledee or Tweedledum and a half."
”If Lord Michael Martin’s bag carrier or the other faceless candidates in this election win then the waters will close over the north-east of Glasgow and nobody will pay a blind bit of notice, and people will be left in the same situation as they are in now".
“If you elect Tommy Sheridan then it will cause a political earthquake that will be felt across the world. You will elect a true fighter. A man who would charge the guns of the enemy without fearing the consequences.” "The others have never faced the kind of real political battles that Tommy Sheridan has." “They have never been jailed for sticking up for the poor, they have never been arrested for opposing weapons of mass destruction on the Clyde at Faslane. Did they march against wars in Afghanistan and Iraq where a million people were butchered? Did they camp out in the cold for 7 days and nights on hunger strike to highlight the plight of the homeless? Did they barricade the doors when sheriff officers tried to sell the goods of poor people in this constituency?” “For 25 years, Sheridan has fought these battles against poverty and injustice, against wars and nuclear weapons. He has dedicated his life to provide a voice for the voiceless.” “On Thursday, elect a true fighter, elect Tommy Sheridan!”
Tommy Sheridan spoke of his commitment to the principle of a workers wage, a principle he put in practice for the 8 years he was an MSP in Holyrood. He spoke of the warped and twisted priorities of a New Labour Government that jailed pensioners for refusing to pay their Council Tax whilst it knighted rich businessmen like Philip Green who avoided paying millions in income tax by paying dividends to his wife who is a tax exile. He spoke of his opposition to the illegal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and how he had fought for the rights of Asylum seekers in the Glasgow North East constituency. He recalled his struggle during the poll tax years when he and scores of others stopped the Strathclyde Labour Council poinding the goods of over 400 citizens in Glasgowin one day. He asked the electorate to give him a change, a short term contract of 6months prior to a May General Election. He promised to show the same work ethic that saw him move more Private Members Bills at Holyrood than any other MSP. Bills to abolish warrant sales, to renationalise the railways, for Free School Meals, to Scrap the Council Tax and for an end to the public sale of Airguns. He finished by saying that the people of Glasgow North East deserved an MP who was on the side of the millions…not the millionaires. Tommy and George were joined over the four meetings by Sighthill ant-racist campaigner Graham Campbell, Youth Fight For Jobs speaker Luke Ivory, Stop the War Coalition's Angela McCormick, striking postie Gary Clark and Royston Community Activist Joe Chalmbers.
