Supermarkets…Don’t Exploit Your Power

Unite activists picket Tesco Galashiels 26/02
The trade union Unite has been targeting Tesco stores across the UK and Ireland in an attempt to expose the company for its practice of exploiting (mainly migrant) workers in its supply chain.

In material handed out by activists at stores the union points out;

Tesco is the largest and probably the most famous retailer in Britain and Ireland. It claims its success depends on people: the people who shop with it and the people who work with it. Tesco claim their “every little helps” strategy is about treating people as Tesco would like to be treated. But evidence about the treatment of workers employed by companies in the British and Irish meat supply industry that supplies Tesco stores tells a different story.

A permanent two-tier workforce has been created, one where mainly migrant agency workers are on even lower conditions than directly employed workers. In some cases the exploitation of workers is shocking.

Unite the union gave its evidence to Tesco and other major retailers more than a year ago. Despite talks and independent research which backed the workers’ claims, Tesco has failed to take effective action by insisting that the meat supply industry stops exploiting its workforce.

Unite believes supermarkets should face up to their responsibilities to workersand communities.

It is time for Tesco to value its supply chain because every worker counts!
