The students have presented the University with a series of demands which include removing Eden Springs from on campus, scholarships to be granted to Palestinians in Gaza and that the University condemns the recent attacks on Gaza.

DEMANDS ALREADY WON:

Statement from the University of Strathclyde:
4 February 2009
50 Students continue to occupy the University of Strathclyde McCance Building, 16 Richmond Street, Glasgow.

University of Strathclyde senior management met with students and representatives from the University's Student Association today to discuss the situation in Gaza.
Dr Peter West, Secretary to the University, said: "The University expresses its deep concern about the plight of the people of Gaza. We are particularly aware that the infrastructure of Higher Education has been damaged, making it particularly difficult for Palestinian students to pursue their studies.

"The University has made a number of undertakings, including supporting its students in their effort to raise funds for the rebuilding of Gaza. In addition, it will immediately investigate the creation of a scholarship scheme for Palestinian students, similar to the scheme already offered to students from Rwanda. It will encourage universities across Scotland to take part in this scheme."

This statement was released at the end of the first round of negotiations between the occupying students delegation and the University Principal and Secretary. The initial agreement was supportive but lacked concrete support, this was put to the wider group and it was rejected. A second set of delegated students have been election and are presently involved in a second round of negotiations over our demands:

PRESS RELEASE
04 Feb. 09
3.00PM

STRATHCLYDE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS OCCUPY PRINCIPLES OFFICE OVER GAZA AND UNIVERSITY ARMS INVESTMENT.

The world has spoken. Millions have marched against Israel's massacre of the people of Gaza. The invasion has left about 1400 people dead, including at least 412 children. Many civilians have serious injuries because of Israel's phosphorous weapons. Thousands have lost their homes, hospitals, schools and universities. Gaza's infrastructure has been destroyed.

The bombs have stopped for now but Israel—supported by prime minister Gordon Brown and the
BBC—continues the siege of Gaza. Israel is preventing desperately needed aid from reaching civilians
through its murderous blockade by land, air and sea.

The BBC is complicit in this in its refusal to broadcast the DEC charity appeal for Gaza—and Gordon Brown has sent not aid ships but warships. Strathclyde University is also complicit. Israeli firm Eden Springs steals water from Palestinian territory—Golan Heights—and sells it in our university while Palestinian so often go without water for days. BAE Systems, a massive arms company that sells components to Israel for the F-16 fighter jets used to bomb Gaza, has major investments in Strathclyde University's engineering department.

Support for such firms profiting from the murder and oppression of Palestinians cannot and will not continue.

Strathclyde University (SU) students' demands:

·SU's Eden Springs contract must be cancelled
·        immediately divest of arms manufacturer BAE Systems and find alternative funding for SU's engineering department
·        the SU board must issue a statement condemning Israel's bombing of Gaza
·        pay for and facilitate 50 scholarships for Palestinians to study at SU
·        show solidarity with the Islamic University of Gaza.  Write a letter of support, twin SU with the university and send money to help rebuild it
·        condemn the BBC for refusing to broadcast the DEC appeal for Gaza; show the appeal in lecture theatres and hold a fundraising day on SU campus
·        oppose Israeli academics who promote military research at SU
