A report released yesterday (14 Nov) by watchdog Consumer Focus revealed that energy companies are making over half a billion pounds extra profit from charges on pre-payment meters to their poorer customers.
Customers with debts are being forced to accept the meters at a rate of 1,000 new customers per day. Despite their claims that the charges are to cover the costs of operating the meters, the watchdog has estimated that the companies earn #550M on top of the running costs of meters. Solidarity believes that only a publicly owned energy company, run for the benefit of the people and not for profit, can serve the needs of customers. Solidarity candidate in East Ayrshire Danny Masterton (pictured, above) said: "We used to own these companies, all profits were re-invested in the industry. Since privatisation we have seen massive job cuts and a free-for all where the companies can rip off the poorest and most vulnerable. Solidarity want to see one national energy company in charge of the production and distribution of energy, not fat profits for private investors while the poorest pay the price." |
