Over 200 activists packed Langside Halls in Glasgow today to hear a series of speakers pledge support for the campaign to defend Tommy Sheridan, his family and comrades. PCS National President, Janice Goodrich opened the rally by talking about the need to stick together in the face of adversity and a history of the recent years of strikes and struggle in public services. Margaret White told of the support from Tommy Sheridan and Kenny Ross in assisting the Sunvic strike. Kenny Ross (FBU) attacked those who stood against Tommy in court two year ago, saying: "They had a choice, and on every occassion chose to side against the movement. It's a sordid story of disgrace and dishonour, they can never be trusted again - they are class traitors." Ross then pledged support for the campaign from the FBU across the UK, this follows the unanimous decision of the FBU London Region to support the campaign in principle and financially. Paddy Hill and Gerry Conlon were greeted by standing ovations. Hill launched an attack of those who took the stand for Murdoch in 2006: "If they can turn their back on Tommy they can do the same to all of us" Conlon related the support the Guildford 4 had from Tommy Sheridan over the years as well as his support for other campaigns against miscarriages of justice. He went on to attack tabloids who destry peoples lives with gossip and scandal. John McManus of the Miscarriages of Justice Organisation (MOJO) told of the disgraceful treatment of Steven Johnstone and Billy Allison and contrasted the investigation into police officers who lied in their trial to that of Tommy Sheridan. Socialist Party councillor Rob Windsor brought solidarity from the Socialist Party in England and Wales and the CWI. Rob said: "Tommy Sheridan was unforgiven by the ruling class for his role in helping bring down Thatcher through the anti-poll tax campaign. Thatcher and Murdoch are on the same side, yet some people who call themselves socialists chose to side with the gutter press." He said that the ideas of socialism espoused by Tommy and others, will be even more important with the impending economic crisis and finished urging people to not only get involved in this campaign but to get involved in socialist politics by joining Solidarity.
The rally closed with a rousing speech from Tommy Sheridan who said that the court cases were only rounds in a fight where the ultimate prize is a better way of life. He was joined on stage at the end by Jock Penman, Pat Smith, Rosemary Byrne and Graeme McIver, all victims of the political witch-hunt.
