The Communication Workers Union (CWU) have escalated their industrial action with a series of strikes over the next two weeks. The first of the actions began on Wed 25th July with staff at Cash Handling and Mail Centres starting a 24 hour stoppage at 7pm. Solidarity member and Postal Worker Gary Clarke said: "Royal Mail managers are treating the workers with contempt. We have been given no choice but to step up our action."
The Postal Worker's action is a vital part of the battle against New Labour's agenda of job cuts, low wages and privatisation and deregulation. At a time when public service workers across the country are fighting back against worsening conditions, pay-offs and below-inflation wage "rises", it is essential that all socialists get behind the postal workers. Solidarity members across Scotland will join the workers on the picket lines. Co-Convenor, Tommy Sheridan called on trade union members to join Solidarity in building a party that will represent workers and trade union values: "Solidarity – Scotland’s Socialist Movement, includes many public sector workers and trade union activists including those active in the CWU, Unison and the PCS union. Following the May elections Solidarity emerged as the main socialist party in every part of Scotland. From the day we were founded we have put trade union principles at the heart of Solidarity. There has never been a more important time to build a party that really represents workers and trade unionists. I would ask you to consider joining us today." |
