Solidarity, Scotland's Socialist Movement today gave it's full backing to NUJ members of the Herald group who are walking out today in protest at Newsquest's plans to sack staff and cut journalistic standards.
Solidarity convenor and NUJ member Tommy Sheridan said: "We are 100% behind the Herald staff. They are resisting a company which is not happy with making £19 million profit last year, but wants to cut jobs and drive down standards in some of Scotlands most important papers. I call upon the new SNP administration at Holyrood to intervene to stop the destruction of our newspaper industry in Scotland by an american company which has no interest in Scotland and is only interested in profit."
Solidarity Press Officer Hugh Kerr, who is a member of the NUJ Scottish Executive said:
"Solidarity will be appealing to the trade union movement in Scotland to back the NUJ members at the Herald group and to all of Scotland not to buy any scab copies of the Herald, Evening Times or Sunday Herald produced this weekend with non NUJ labour. Newsquest must be stopped in their drive to cut jobs and journalistic standards in Scotland." |
