In a statement from Wullie Patterson, Regional Secretary for the Community union, which represents most of the sacked workforce, the workers called for support for their cause; “These workers were viciously and summarily dismissed by their employer Sam Russell last Monday morning when they were locked out of their place of employment. Our members are/were a hard working, loyal and committed workforce who do not deserve to be treated in such a fashion. These are working class people who for reasons not yet properly established have been thrown on the scrap heap without consultation, without a statutory notice period and with the public purse left to pick up the redundancy tab.” Solidarity MSP Rosemary Byrne, who joined in the occupation of the Kilwinning site over the previous weekend spoke of her admiration for the hard work and determination of the workforce. Speaking at the reception in the parliament, Rosemary said, “You are an inspiration to workers everywhere. You have proved that unity is indeed strength. "I pledge to you now my continued support and the support of Solidarity in your just fight for fair treatment.” |
