The rise of Solidarity, Scotland’s Socialist Movement continued at pace this week with another set of rallies and meetings across the country. On Monday, Solidarity MSPs Tommy Sheridan and Rosemary Byrne addressed 70 activists and socialists in Paisley Town Hall. Tuesday saw a packed day with Solidarity students and Tommy Sheridan holding a public meeting in Dundee University that attracted 60 young people. Special branch activity focussing on young Muslims in Dundee was the main issue and 13 new members joined the movement. From there Philip Stott and Tommy Sheridan visited a local fire control centre under threat of closure with Jim Malone of the FBU.
Following a packed press conference that was beamed live across the UK and the world where Tommy attacked the Murdoch empire, a public rally in the Maryatt Hall attracted almost 250 members of the public. The meeting featured a wide range of speakers and activists continuing the theme of Solidarity do far – that we are in this together! Another 30 members signed up to movement on the night. On Wednesday Tommy Sheridan spoke at Edinburgh University's Politics Society (read report here ). Solidarity started on the campaign trail with a launch rally on 03 September. Rosemary Byrne took part in a "Stop the War" rally in Edinburgh on 17 September, Tommy Sheridan then spoke from the platform of the "Time to Go" rally in Manchester on the 23rd (watch video here ) and again at the Independence First rally on the 30th (watch video here ). The tour of public rallies started at the end of that month, meetings have already taken place in Edinburgh, where almost 200 attended, Dunfermline and Cumnock. The tour continues next week with meetings in Inverness on Monday and Hamilton on Tuesday before Tommy Sheridan’s appearance on BBC’s Question Time on Thursday evening. On Monday 16th Tommy and other Solidarity members including Angela McCormick head for Lebanon as guests of Scotland’s Lebanese community to witness first hand the devastation caused by Israel’s illegal assault on that country.
