Solidarity New Year Message Print E-mail
Sunday, 31 December 2006
As we go into 2007, Solidarity, Scotland's Socialist Movement, looks ahead with confidence and optimism.

We continue to grow and become stronger in every region, city, town and village in Scotland, establishing ourselves as the only principled party of the left in Scotland. Offering solidarity with all those in struggle as we move towards what will be an historic election in May, we aim to return an MSP in every region of Scotland and a councillor in every local authority.

Campaigning for a break up of the British state after 300 years of union, we will do so alongside serious political activists and trade unionists. We will never engage in immature stunts, such as dressing up in Robin Hood suits, but will instead continue to focus and engage on the issues that impact on the lives of working class people with all the seriousness that those issues demand.

We will fight on the picket lines with the workers of Scotland and the UK, joining them in
taking on the government’s agenda of privatisation, closures, cut backs and redundancies. We will stand arm in arm with anti-war protesters here and across the world. We will continue to stand in solidarity with resistance to ethnic cleansing and colonial occupation in Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq and Afghanistan.
Solidarity will never waver in offering support and comradeship to our Muslim brothers and sisters here at home, currently on the sharp end of New Labour’s vicious attacks on our hard won civil liberties. We also pledge support to Scotland's youth, made scapegoats for society’s ills, and to our pensioners, struggling to stay warm this winter even as privately owned energy companies announce astronomical profits and fat cat salaries which give new meaning to the word repugnant.

Scotland’s Socialist Movement sends a welcome to refugees and asylum seekers
who wish to make Scotland their home. Your presence and contribution strengthens us and makes our small country a better place.

We will stand with those seeking environmental justice in communities across
Scotland from Mallaig to Melrose, Stranraer to Stromness. We will stand
against the replacement of the Trident missiles at Faslane, condemning in advance the £76b that will be spent on weapons of mass destruction while people die through lack of fresh water and food.

2007 will be the year of Solidarity, the year of fighting back. We call on the working class and the oppressed to stand with us in fighting back against injustice and oppression.

Finally, for all those who have been left demoralised and disillusioned by the actions of so-called socialists in 2006, we have a simple message.

Join us!
