Thursday, 07 December 2006
Solidarity MSP Rosemary Byrne today lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament calling for support for the unfairpak demo against HBOS on Monday 11th September. Byrne and her party have been active supporters of Farepak victims and the campaign group since the start and last week, Suzy Hall, who leads the unfairpak campaign, praised the Solidarity Co-Convenor’s contribution to the debate in parliament on the issue, describing it as “fantastic”.  Solidarity members in the Lothians have been building for the demo and produced thousands of leaflets for Suzy and the campaign, the Solidarity action has inspired other parties in the parliament to get behind the campaign and take similar actions.  The South of Scotland MSP said:

“I want all MSPs and all parties to give full support to this demo, HBOS must accept their responsibilities in this matter and assist in compensation for the theft of money from hard-working families at Christmas”

Suzy Hall of unfairpak will be a guest on Solidarity MSP Tommy Sheridan’s talk107 radio show “Sunday Morning With Citizen Tommy” this week in an attempt to increase support for the demo the following day. The Glasgow MSP for Scotland’s fastest growing political party said:

“I am honoured that Suzy has agreed to come on the show, she is a fine example of a real working class campaigner and fighter.”

Rosemary Byrne MSP motion in Parliament: A Christmas Cheer for unfairpak Campaigners

That this Parliament congratulates the unfairpak campaigners on their continuing campaign against European Home Retail and HBOS; recognises the hard work and determination of the campaigners in their fight to gain justice for the thousands of low paid families facing a desperate Christmas after the collapse that may have cost 300,000 customers estimated savings of more than £100 million; acknowledges that those customers saved in good faith, did not borrow money or use credit cards in short acted in a prudent and financially responsible manner and have been robbed as a result; notes that on Monday the 11th December HBOS are holding a champagne reception for shareholders at their headquarters at the Mound Edinburgh; further notes that the unfairpak campaigners intend to hold a dignified demonstration at the Mound to demand recompense from HBOS; calls on the directors of HBOS and European Home Retail to honour their moral obligations to their customers and to reimburse them in full; further recognises that the UK Government has failed to legislate to prevent this disgraceful situation from arising and calls on the Scottish Executive to demand that the UK Government legislates now to prevent future families from facing the bleak Christmas that confronts the unfairpak customers.
