Vote Solidarity in Glasgow East
Vote for Solidarity and Tricia McLeish;
For a living wage for all workers and decent pensions for our senior citizens, for radical wealth redistribution to end the misery of poverty.
For democratic public ownership of power companies and an end to the privitisation of our public services, for trade union rights and an end to illegal wars.
For an independant socialist Scotland.
Solidarity takes the War to Glasgow East
Solidarity candidate Tricia Mcleish will today be campaigning in the Glasgow East bye election raising the issue of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Tricia began her day by appearing in a live debate on Radio Scotland at 7.30 she said;
" I shall be today highlighting how the poverty and deprivation in Glasgow East could be solved by a fraction of the money spent on illegal and unjust wars and the 100 billion Labour are spending on renewing Trident.I shall also point out that Scots troops are dying or being injured in large numbers as they make up one third of frontline troops.It is time we brought all the troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan."
DTS Rally 7th June 2008
In a massive show of support for the Sheridan 7 and defiance of Rupert Murdoch over 250 people packed Langside Halls on the 7th June to attend the Defend Tommy Sheridan / Defend the Sheridan 7 rally.
Messages of support were read from Bob Crow and Riccky Tomlinson and others who were unable to attend, however, a series of impassioned speeches were heard from prominent Trade Union speakers and Misscarriages of Justice speakers amongst others including Tommy Sheridan.
Fortunately most speeches were recorded and some of these can be replayed from You Tube by clicking on the links below
It is with great sadness that I have to inform those of you who are not already aware that Wilma Peters, Lanarkshire Solidarity Treasurer, did not recover from a sudden heart attack at 7:00 am on Sunday morning.
Since joining Solidarity, Wilma had worked tirelessly to raise funds for the Party, mainly through organising social events, and in doing so brought a great feeling of joy and comradeship to an ever-growing number of Solidarity members as well as friends and supporters of the Party.
She will be sadly missed by us all and our condolences go out to her sister Grace and her husband, Danny, her sons, John, Alan, Mark and David and her partner, Johannas.
Details, regarding the funeral arrangements, which will be conducted as a celebration of her life, are listed below:-

Solidarity members charged with perjury
Solidarity today condemned as scandalous and unprecedented the widening vendetta being pursued by Lothian and Borders Police and the Scottish Crown office against our party and Tommy Sheridan.
We can today confirm that Solidarity members Jock Penman, our National Secretary Graeme McIver and our co-convener Rosemary Byrne have all now been charged with perjury by Lothian and Borders police. We expect that other Solidarity members will also be charged in the coming days.
Their "crime" in the eyes of the Murdoch empire, the police and sections of the Scottish legal establishment has been to stand shoulder-to shoulder with Tommy Sheridan throughout his defamation case and since.
The Solidarity party has launched an Affordable Homes for All campaign in the Highlands, demanding that the UK government, the Scottish Government and local government now act with urgency to deal with the huge and increasing tragedy of lack of affordable housing for thousands of people in the area. Solidarity will be taking to the streets in the Highlands capital Inverness and throughout towns and villages in the region with a petition demanding that Gordon Brown and the UK government act immediately to cancel the historic housing debt of councils’ like Highland to release the cash for new housing, and work with the SNP in Holyrood and local authorities to immediately begin building new council homes at affordable rents.
Over the past two days the news for the current anti-government movement hasn't been encouraging. By most accounts the regime's soldiers and police have largely succeeded in neutralizing the Buddhist monks who gave such a powerful impetus to the opposition when they joined street protests earlier this month. The security forces have cordoned off monasteries, confining some monks inside and arresting hundreds, if not thousands, of others. Many demonstrators have been beaten and detained; dozens of people (no one knows the precise number) have been shot. And the government's success in curtailing the flow of information to the outside world has also made its work easier. Small wonder that some media accounts are making it sound as though the government has already triumphed.
However, there now appears to be a move towards using the General Strike as a weapon against the brutality of the incumbent regime. The events in Burma seem to portray a popular revolution unfolding right now and this is is an issue which deserves a place on our website, so that socialists within and around our movement remain informed.
Neither the popular press nor the mass media would dare to suggest that the road to democracy in Burma and the resolution of this crisis, might be acheivable through the mobilisation of the Burmese working class but this now seems a distinct possibility. Of course we recognise as socialists that democracy can only be guarenteed by workers organising against their oppressors.

Solidarity members across Scotland should make every effort to demonstrate their solidarity with those on trial by being present outside Ayr Sheriff Court on Wednesday 8th August at 9:30am (Trial scheduled to start at 10:00am). Solidarity banners and placards in support of the "Prestwick Eight" should be evident outside the courthouse. There will be limited space available inside the courtroom for those who wish to observe the proceedings.
August 2007 Trial Of Prestwick Activists
On 8-10th August 2007 the trial is scheduled to take place at Ayr Sheriff Court of activists who carried out inspections of Prestwick Airport on the night of the 6th/7th August last year to look for evidence of US munitions bound for Israel for use in the Lebanon conflict.
For three nights running (5th, 6th and 7th August 2006) Trident Ploughshares activists organized citizens’ inspections at Prestwick Airport. They had been alerted to the likelihood that the airport was being used by the US military to supply Israel with munitions that would be used in their military bombardment of civilian areas of Lebanon. To campaigners usually concerned with Trident and its illegality, this use of Prestwick Airport by the US seemed to be yet another example of a flagrant breach of international law, this time involving the aiding and abetting of war crimes. The authorities which should have responded to these allegations, principally Strathclyde Police and the (then Labour-controlled) Scottish Executive, showed no signs of taking investigative action. In this vacuum Trident Ploughshares decided to act in the public interest and send in citizen inspectors to look for evidence.
Facing trial on 8 - 10th August are Matt Bury (50) from Somerset, Sarah Lasenby (68) from Oxford, Jean Oliver (48) and Douglas Shaw (56), both from Biggar, Olivia Agate (65) from Helensburgh, Marcus Armstrong (46) from Milton Keynes, Chris Bluemel (25) from Southampton, and Angie Zelter (55) from Cromer. They are charged with various offences under the Civil Aviation Act.
