No to Lowering Abortion Time Limits |
|
Plans to lower the legal limit for abortions to less than 24 weeks is not based on any evidence and is a further reduction in the rights of women to choose. Amendments to the Government's Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill seek to change the law to prevent abortions after 20 weeks. Solidarity condemns the move as dangerous and based on emotive lobbying from religious groups opposed to the right to choose. The argument that foetuses are now viable at less than 24 weeks is contrary to medical science and should be resistyed at all costs. Leah Ganley, member of the Solidarity National Steering Committee said: "As socialists, we support the right of a woman to choose whether, when and how many children to have. This means not only opposing any restrictions on the current abortion laws, but also campaigning to improve them, calling for free abortion on request, without the requirement of two doctors’ signatures, as well as training nurses and midwifes to carry out early abortions." |

Support for the Sheridan Seven Grows |
|
Actor and political activist Ricky Tomlinson has added his support to the campaign to defend Tommy Sheridan and his comrades and family who have become victims of the Murdoch-inspired political witch-hunt.
Tomlinson could not attend the forthcoming campaign rally but sent a message of support to the campaign saying "Tommy's crime in their eyes is to successfully lead a great movement against the poll tax and go on to be elected in his prison cell as a workers' leader. The Labour Movement and all those committed to uphold natural justice should unite in defence of workers' leaders who find themselves in this position." Meanhwile the Scottish Regional Secretary of the FBU, Kenny Ross, has called on FBU members to give full support to the campaign. In a message to all FBU officials in the UK he says, "In the true spirit of solidarity, it is incumbent on us to reciprocate the unconditional support that he has given us for so long." The Public Rally to Defend the Sheridan 7 will be held in Langside Halls Glasgow on Saturday 7th June at 1pm Speakers include Bob Crow, Janice Godrich, Kenny Ross, Gerry Conlon & John McManus To see a copy of the leaflet Click here To read Ricky Tomlinson's full statement click 'read more' below. |

Solidarity with Aamer Anwar - Defend the Right to Free Speech |
|
The contempt case against Aamer Anwar was heard at Edinburgh High Court on Tuesday 29 the verdict has been reserved.
Over 70 supporters of Aamer, many from Solidarity, picketed the court. In an unprecedented action, a representative of Liberty the Civil Rights campaign, was permitted to make 3rd party representation on the Human Rights implications of the case and argue that a conviction would be illegal under the European Convention on Human Rights. In an earlier statement, Solidarity said "This is a vital battle, Solidarity believes that this action restricts the rights of lawyers to represent their clients. This is a political action by the authorities against Scotland's foremost socialist lawyer and one of our most important campaigners for human rights and civil liberties. We offer full support to Aamer Anwar, the Siddique family and the Defend Aamer Anwar Campaign." For full details of the campaign visit www.sacc.org.uk |

Solidarity with Grangemouth Workers |
At 6am on the 27th April the night shift at the Grangemouth oil refinery walked out of the plant signaling the beginning of a 48 hour stoppage by 1200 workers that ceases the flow of oil from the North Sea and the distribution of fuel from Grangemouth to petrol stations around Scotland and the North of England. The end of the shift also gave a crushing answer to the media inspired propaganda war against the workers that has been conducted in the national media (predictably managements case gained the lions share of the coverage).
More than 100 workers and supporters including members of Solidarity who also distributed material welcoming the action and outlining the importance of a victory as a beacon to others fighting against attacks on pension schemes, took part in the 11am rally at Grangemouth on Sunday.
The mood was angry and determined. The appearance of the owner of the plant, the venture capitalist Jim Ratcliffe, at number 25 in the Sunday Times Rich List (a personal fortune of £2.3 billion) on the day the strike began, was not lost on the workforce. |

PCS Workers say: Give us a Living Wage |
|
On Thursday the 24th and Friday 25th of April, PCS workers will take part in the latest of a series of days of strike action in defence of pay and conditions.
PCS members in the DWP should be congratulated for their readiness to take further strike action in the face of one of the worst employers in the country – this Government. DWP workers were the first to take on the Governments pay restraint policy in their fantastically strong and united strike action on December 6th and 7th. |

Solidarity with Egyptian Workers |
|
Solidarity today condemns the actions of the Egyptian government in its suppression of a wave of mass strikes by Egyptian workers. Hundreds of workers have been arrested and detained whilst the indiscriminate use of rubber bullets, tear gas and live ammunition has left 2 dead and countless others wounded.
Writing online, one Egyptian activist described the scene in the city of Mahalla;
“Try to imagine what the pictures you see of Palestinian towns under occupation… Mahalla is similar to that now. Soldiers, armored vehicles, firetrucks.. Since last night the clashes ended. But who knows, everything may change in a second.”

Internationalism is at the Heart of Solidarity |
|

Internationalism has been and continues to be one of Solidarity’s key priorities. It is based on the understanding that an economic system predicated on profit regardless of the human, social or environmental cost is global in scope and reach.
This means that resistance and opposition to it must also take on a global aspect. Under globalization workers across the world have found themselves plunged into a race to the bottom with one another as they compete for the favours of global corporations.
It is for this reason that the wages and conditions of Scottish workers have diminished and will continue to diminish in real terms. As a socialist party which fights for a world in which cooperation and solidarity replaces competition and endless wars for markets and resources, we reject the idea that workers must compete for the crumbs from the table of global corporations whose profits rise year on year to levels that are beyond obscene.
