Solidarity Conference
Solidarity members from across Scotland came together in Glasgow last Saturday (November 28th) for the party’s 3rd Annual Conference. After attending the STUC’s Anti-Racism march in the morning the party met to discuss an array of important motions and amendments.
Included in the motions that were agreed were support for the Postal Workers, a call to help build for the 2010 Right to Work Conference, a call to bring the Whisky Industry into public ownership, opposition to council cuts, support for an Independence Referendum, calls for troops out of Afghanistan and no to an attack on Iran.
Also passed were motions in favour of continuing Solidarity’s involvement in the discussions led by the RMT union aimed at ensuring a socialist and trade union challenge at the 2010 General election and to continue the party’s principled support for the building of left unity here in Scotland and beyond.
Conference was addressed by speakers including Ronnie Stevenson Convenor of UNISON Shop Stewards at Glasgow City Council’s social work department, (in a personal capacity) and Vanesa Fuertes and Kevin Connor from the Scottish Palestinian Solidarity Campaign.

Reaction to The Glasgow North East Result
pic by STV News
Solidarity beat the Liberal Democrats and once again emeged as Scotland's biggest socialist party. However, the number of left candidates and the performance of the far right BNP gives us much to think about.

Read The Glasss Half Full or Half Empty by Tommy Sheridan
"The turnout marked a new low in Scottish by-election history. The previous low of 36% was surpassed. For the first time 2 out of every 3 voters decided to ignore the election and stay at home in protest at the sorry state politics has been dragged down to by a New Labour government in particular whose members have gorged themselves with illegitimate expense clams while lying to justify wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and presiding over an obscene growth in inequality across society."
“If you elect Tommy Sheridan then it will cause a political earthquake that will be felt across the world. You will elect a true fighter. A man who would charge the guns of the enemy without fearing the consequences.”
George Galloway MP 10/11/09
Solidarity finished their Glasgow North East by-election campaign on high after four packed meetings in the constituency attracted hundreds of people. Tommy Sheridan and George Galloway spoke to packed halls in North Glasgow College, in Sighthill, Royston and Alexandra Parade. During the course of the campaign, Solidarity has been the ONLY party to hold public meetings. In addition to the events on the 10th November, the party held meetings in Springburn, Petershill, Possil Park and Milton.
Solidarity also held a press conference and both George and Tommy were interviewed later in the day. (Press coverage here) George Galloway traveled to Glasgow North east at his own expense to campaign on behalf of his friend and comrade Tommy Sheridan. He said;
“Only by electing Tommy Sheridan do the people of this constituency have a chance for real change.”
